Being a man with thinning hair, my favorite episode is found in the ninth season of Treehouse of Horror. The segment is called “Hell Toupee” after Homer is given the long locks of the recently executed long time criminal Snake Jailbird. The hair piece, in traditional Simpson fashion, of course then takes on a violent life of its own far beyond bumbling Homer’s control.
Other than The Simpsons, a treasure trove of classic sitcoms have featured episodes regarding toupees. Here are some of the shows and the best toupee hair pieces for men’s thinning hair characters who wore a hair piece in an episode, for better or worse.
George on Seinfeld
Jerry’s best friend and sometimes employee of the front office of the New York Yankees (played by Jason Alexander) had tried a rather malodorous hair restoration product from China in an earlier episode, but in a later one he purchased an unimpressive toupee.
Fester on The Addams Family
Gomez’s uncle (played by Jackie Coogan) covered his usually slick head with a hair piece that frightened even the extremely “creepy and kooky” clan the show was named after.
Emmitt on Mayberry RFD
After making several mysterious visits to the beauty parlor, Mayberry’s Mr. Fix It (played by Paul Hartman) makes an effort to look younger by donning a mess of fake follicles.
Kevin from The Office
Michael Scott and the Dunder Mifflin paper company were determined to reduce the median age of its staff, prompting Creed to dye his hair a deep black and this colleague from accounting to cover his bald top.
Alan from The Dick Van Dyke Show
The title character in the “Coast To Coast Big Mouth” episode is Laura (played by Mary Tyler Moore), who as a guest on a game show lets out that her husband’s boss Alan Brady (played by Carl Reiner) wears a toupee.
